The first three nights in a motorhome: what nobody tells you

Your first trip will involve a sloping pitch, a suspicious fitted sheet and a degree in very small plumbing, but by night three you will be wondering why you ever worried.

Every new motorhome owner begins their first trip with the confidence of someone who has watched three videos, bought a collapsible washing up bowl and folded six jumpers into a cupboard the size of a cereal box. Then the first campsite arrives, the pitch looks flat from a distance and the motorhome starts revealing its personality. This is not failure. This is the orientation programme.

The brochure showed a couple with a glass of wine at sunset. It did not show them both standing in the doorway asking which switch controls the water pump, why the bathroom light is on and whether the cupboard door always makes that noise. The good news is that nearly every early mistake becomes funny once there is enough time between you and the mistake.

The pitch has been lying to you

From the road, a campsite pitch can look flatter than a pool table. Park on it, place a mug on the table and watch it begin an unhurried journey towards the passenger seat. This is the moment you learn that levelling ramps are less an accessory and more a small plastic peace treaty between you and the laws of physics.

Keep the ramps where you can reach them before arrival, rather than behind the chairs, hose and bag containing every useful item except the one you need. Take your time and accept that somebody nearby may watch. They are not judging you. They are simply enjoying free television with a very slow plot.

The bed will test your character

A motorhome bed can be wonderfully comfortable once it is made. The words once it is made are carrying most of the sentence. On night one, the fitted sheet may discover a personal objection to one corner while the duvet expands into a soft octopus with no interest in cooperation.

Make the bed before you are exhausted, keep a torch nearby and do not expect boutique hotel standards on the first attempt. It may look as though a laundry basket has been caught in a minor weather event. By the third night, you will have a system, mainly because you have seen what happens without one.

At 2am, everything wants to be heard

At home, a mystery click can be blamed on the boiler, the pipes or the neighbours. In a motorhome, you are sleeping close to the fridge, heater, water pump, control panel and several cupboards that have retained strong views about the last roundabout. A normal little whirr at 2am can sound like the opening scene of an expensive disaster film.

Most odd sounds are ordinary systems doing their jobs, so read the handbook in daylight rather than during a midnight panic. But comedy ends where safety begins. If you smell gas, hear a carbon monoxide alarm, see smoke or notice a burning smell, follow HSE carbon monoxide safety guidance, get everyone into fresh air and seek proper help.

The water system is waiting for you to blame the wrong thing

The first attempt to use a tap often follows the same script. You turn it confidently, nothing happens, and you briefly consider whether the motorhome has been supplied without water as a character building exercise. Then someone finds the water pump switch and everyone behaves as though they knew that all along.

Fill the fresh water tank using a clean hose kept for drinking water, follow the handbook and open the taps until water runs steadily. If the pump keeps cycling when every tap is off, do not ignore it because a leak or open drain valve may need attention. On a first trip, though, it is often a tap that is not fully closed or a shower control left in a mood.

The control panel will become your emotional support device

At some point, you will stare at the leisure battery display as if it is about to reveal the winning lottery numbers. Battery readings move when you use lights, the pump, a phone charger or the heating fan, which is normal. The panel is there to inform you, not to become your entire evening’s entertainment.

Keep the fridge on the correct setting for where you are parked, turn off an inverter when you do not need it and check the handbook before deciding the numbers mean disaster. If you have electric hook up, connect it safely using the right equipment and confirm that the battery is charging as your motorhome maker says it should. You are allowed to drink a cup of tea without conducting a summit meeting with the control panel.

The washroom is not tiny, it is extremely optimistic

Nobody enters a motorhome washroom for the first time and says, “Goodness, all this room.” It is compact because it has to be, and it works well once you stop trying to recreate your entire bathroom routine in an area with less floor space than a large doormat. Keep only the toiletries you actually use nearby and hang wet towels where they can dry.

Then there is the cassette. It is not glamorous, and pretending otherwise would be the sort of lie that gets people banned from Christmas dinner. Read the instructions before it becomes urgent, use the proper products for your system and empty it only at the correct disposal point. After the first time, the mystery disappears and is replaced by an unreasonable feeling of achievement.

The windows will cry before you do

On the first cold morning, you may wake to misted windows and briefly conclude that you have invented damp overnight. Usually, you have not. Two people breathing, cooking and drying the occasional wet coat in a compact warm space create moisture because science has no respect for your new adventure.

Use the roof vent and suitable ventilation as your handbook advises, never block fixed vents and wipe wet surfaces dry in the morning. An external thermal screen can help around the cab. You do not need to create an indoor gale. You simply need to give the moisture somewhere to go other than every window you own.

By night three, you will be dangerously confident

Something changes on the third night. You know where the mugs are, you can locate the torch without opening all the lockers and you have identified the cupboard that needs a gentle push rather than a wrestling hold. The motorhome has stopped feeling like a complicated machine and started feeling like your own slightly eccentric little home.

There will still be tiny mishaps, because that is part of the arrangement. You may put the milk in the wrong cupboard, search for the keys while holding them or announce that you are definitely leaving by ten before discovering the awning pegs.

The simple rule is this: laugh, keep the handbook nearby and remember that every experienced motorhome owner began with the same puzzled face and fewer reliable places for biscuits.
