The figure to remember is **3,050kg unladen**, not the 3,500kg maximum authorised mass commonly discussed in driving licence rules. Here are the essentials for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, covering ordinary motorhomes, caravans, trailers and towed cars. Always obey a lower posted limit and slow down further when conditions require it.   ## Which weight matters for motorhome speed limits?   **Unladen weight** excludes passengers, carried goods and fuel but includes the body and parts normally used with the vehicle. **Maximum authorised mass (MAM)** is the maximum permitted loaded weight. The [official weight definitions](https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-weights-explained) explain the difference.   The [government speed-limit guidance](https://www.gov.uk/speed-limits) divides ordinary motor caravans into two groups: those at or below 3,050kg unladen and those above it. Mass in running order should not automatically be substituted for unladen weight, and a loaded weighbridge ticket does not establish it. Ask the manufacturer if the correct figure is unclear.   ## Motorhome speed limits at a glance ![speed-limit-chart](https://camperbuyer.com/hs-fs/hubfs/speed-limit-chart.png?width=1800&height=1200&name=speed-limit-chart.png) The following national defaults apply to ordinary touring motor caravans in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Solo figures assume a motorhome no longer than 12 metres, with no unusual passenger configuration or other applicable restricted class. Lower signed limits still apply.   | Road | Up to 3,050kg unladen | Over 3,050kg unladen | Towing one trailer | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Restricted roads: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland | 30mph | 30mph | 30mph | | Restricted roads: Wales | 20mph | 20mph | 20mph | | Single carriageway, national limit | 60mph | 50mph | 50mph | | Dual carriageway, national limit | 70mph | 60mph | 60mph | | Motorway, national limit | 70mph | 70mph | 60mph |   A dual carriageway has a central reservation separating opposing carriageways; two lanes going your way alone do not make it one. Restricted-road defaults normally relate to street lighting, unless a different limit is signed.   **Goods-vehicle exception:** GOV.UK says motorhomes carrying goods for exhibition and sale, or used as a workshop or for storage, are classed as goods vehicles. Their limits can differ from this touring-motorhome table.   **Long-motorhome exception:** a motor caravan above 3,050kg unladen and exceeding 12 metres has a 60mph motorway maximum. Great Britain's rules appear in [Schedule 6](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1984/27/schedule/6); Northern Ireland's matching categories appear in its [separate speed regulations](https://www.legislation.gov.uk/nisr/1989/203/pdfs/nisr_19890203_en.pdf).   ## Towing a trailer, caravan or car   When an ordinary motor caravan tows one trailer, the national maximum is **50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways**. A light luggage trailer does not preserve the solo 70mph motorway allowance.   These limits cover caravans, trailer-tents and cars carried on trailers. Include the trailer, car and other cargo when checking weights. Passengers must not travel inside a caravan while it is being towed.   ### Motorway lane restrictions   When towing, you must not use the right-hand lane of a Great Britain motorway with three or more lanes, except in prescribed circumstances. [Highway Code Rule 265](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/motorways-253-to-273) also restricts certain goods and passenger vehicles when not towing.   Do not assume every large motorhome has the same lane restriction. Vehicle classification, weight and speed-limiter requirements can matter. ### Towing a car on an A-frame   In Great Britain, the Department for Transport's interpretation treats the car and A-frame as a temporary trailer unit for construction purposes. A compliant arrangement therefore follows the ordinary one-trailer speed limits.   The [DfT guidance](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/a-frames-and-dollies/a-frames-and-dollies) is not approval of an individual installation. Braking, lights, reflectors, coupling and registration display must comply. Even a small car below 750kg must have its fitted brakes operating correctly when used this way.   Consult both the car and A-frame manufacturers. Modern safety systems can make some cars unsuitable. Check these essentials:   - **Weight:** towing capacity, trailer rating, permitted train weight and axle limits. A towbar alone does not prove capacity. - **Licence:** the correct entitlement for the motorhome and trailer. C1 ordinarily covers a trailer up to 750kg; heavier trailers require appropriate C1E entitlement. - **Equipment:** serviceable brakes, tyres, lights, the appropriate breakaway cable or secondary coupling, and adequate rearward visibility, with towing mirrors where necessary. The trailer's rear plate must match the towing vehicle. - **Insurance:** appropriate cover for the motorhome and the trailer or towed car. Check your actual licence categories and restriction codes using [GOV.UK licence guidance](https://www.gov.uk/driving-licence-categories). Northern Ireland licence holders should follow [DVA motorhome guidance](https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/driving-motorhomes) rather than assuming Great Britain's entitlement changes apply.   **The simple rule:** establish your unladen weight, use the correct road category and switch to towing limits whenever a trailer is attached.
